Holiday Mini Guide

Well, it's that time of year again!  Time for turkey, stuffing, sneaking the last of the Halloween candy, and planning for your Holiday family photos!

I am so excited to welcome new and returning families for mini sessions this year, and I hope that this guide will help you with the most frequently asked questions: What should we wear?  What can we expect? What's next?

What should we wear?

1. COORDINATE: The days of matchy-matchy are over, yay! Instead, I recommend choosing a coordinating palette of 3-4 colors and go from there! I usually recommend starting with Mom's outfit and building off of that.

2. COLOR POPS: Keep things mainly neutral with pops of color. For example, choose mainly khaki, grays, browns, creams or ivories - with shots of rust or green or navy. Steer clear of brights or neons as they do not photography well and often cast unflattering colors on various skin tones.

3. TEXTURE VS. PATTERN: Patterns are beautiful, we all love patterns, but it can be difficult to coordinate a variety of patterns. Instead, choose a single pattern and mix in various textures. Knits, leathers and lace are just a few examples of subtle pattern within texture.

4. ACCESSORIES: Adding accessories is an easy way to show off  individual personality within a coordinated set of outfits. Choose your own scarves, hats, belts, wraps, ties and/or jewelry.

5. BE COMFY: It is important to consider colors and textures when choosing what to wear for a family session, but the most important tip I can offer is to be sure that everyone is comfortable. You and your family are going to feel the most at ease if you are comfortable in your clothing. Choose to be stylish and practical at the same time! (although, if you're comfortable with it: when in doubt dress up!)

Outdoor Holiday sessions do pose a unique situation in which it may be cold out. Hopefully shorter sessions will help eliminate much of this concern, but if you feel colder temperatures will cause issues for your family, I recommend going with coordinating coats, scarves, hats, etc.  This makes for a super fun and cozy look, while keeping everyone warm and protected from the elements!

Here are a few style boards that I created, that I hope will provide some inspiration. (all pieces are from Old Navy or Amazon).

What Can We Expect?

Please plan to arrive 5ish minutes early to give yourself plenty of time for last minute issues that may arise.  Mini Sessions are scheduled to allow a specific amount of time between sessions for adequate sanitizing, and any amount of time that you're late will directly impact the length of your session and number of images you may receive.

Have fun! Relaxed parents families = Beautiful portraits! I usually have a pocket full of smarties to hand out to (aka bribe) age appropriate kids.

I will guide you into "poses" and then I will prompt you so that we can capture not only the "say cheese" moments, but also some genuine moments of your family interacting. Don't worry if you don't feel natural in front of the camera, I will guide you every step of the way!

Overall you can expect your session time to fly by, hopefully you have a little fun hanging out with your family.

What's Next?

All sessions will be delivered through an online gallery.  The digital images are high resolution and you will also have a print release to print your images where you prefer.  The wonderful thing about the gallery is it's also connected to my professional printing lab so that you can order prints through my lab if you prefer.  I will receive your order and then personally send the files and order to the lab to be mailed to your home.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I can't wait to see you!
